After a few weekends of not doing much we decided today we would try to do something. It turned out that we just did a bunch of not so much......in another location. But a pretty nice location.
Mandorah sits just across the harbour from Darwin. It is a quick ferry ride across (so quick that Scott feels we shouldn't have to pay.....he thinks a dingy will do.....if he wants to take a dingy through the croc and shark infested water he can go ahead and do that. I'll stick to the ferry!) and offers a great view of the harbour on the way. Although some people think it is an island it is in fact part of the Australian mainland....it just takes a few hours to drive all the way around. A few hundred people live in the area so rely on the ferry to get back and forth for work and school and that kind of thing.
The tide is a little ways out. That isn't the ferry to Mandorah. That is in fact the boat the heads out to the Tiwi Islands. The little ferry that goes to Mandorah is hidden in behind it.
Scott, Debi and our friend Tommi (from Finland) on the ferry as we leave Cullen Bay.
That's the ferry heading back towards Darwin. And of course that is downtown Darwin it is heading back to.
The Mandorah Hotel and a little stranded boat. I guess a stranded boat gives some one a reason to have another pint.
A look at the hotel from the beach.
So there isn't much out in Mandorah except a small hotel with a patio bar and a pool. Like I said, a few hundred people do live in the area so I imagine there is a bit more to see but you would need a car to do. The ferry is for people only though so we will have to make the drive around if we want to explore it. So instead we just made our way to the hotel pub. Today they had pretty good band playing so we just hung out and enjoyed the day.
The view from our table. Relaxing enough.
This is where that stranded boat would have been sitting but the tide is on it's way back in and someone has obviously decided to take the opportunity to move their boat.
A little listen to the band.
And that about sums up our day in Mandorah. Certainly a nice little day trip.
