Right across the street from Independence Hall is the current home to the Liberty Bell. (Of course it use to be in the tower in Independence Hall but was moved when it cracked and did not work anymore). Although it cannot ring anymore it still stands as one of the biggest symbols of liberty and freedom (Liberty Bell……not just a clever name). Same tight security to get in which really does resemble airport check points except they seem to be much meaner here than at the airport. The crack in the bell is really big but it is funny to know that the big crack (which it is famous for) is not the original crack. The original crack was much smaller and the tour guide actually had to point it out. The large crack was actually caused when they tried to fix the original crack. It didn’t work and now people come from all over the place to have their picture taken with it (see below). (See sometimes you CAN make things worse by trying to fix it). The walls in the building that house the bell are with covered pictures of some very famous people who came to see the bell. I thought one of the most interesting pictures was the one of Nelson Mandela. If ever there was a symbol of liberty and freedom you would think Nelson Mandela would be it. Of course the United States was formed on the idea that everyone was equal and that the country (and its government) should belong to the people. This was promised to the people in the US constitution. Of course it took a civil war and the Civil Rights movement before this actually happened but all that is for an entirely different blog posting and a visit to an entirely different place.
