Next State Please

Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Arriving in Adelaide meant that I had crossed a state line one more time. I now find myself in Southern Australia. I also found an absolutely gorgeous summer day (28 C,82 F). It was a very nice change from the cooler temperatures I experienced in Melbourne and Tasmania.

I was not sure what to expect from Adelaide before I arrived. Most people tell me it's a good place to visit Kangaroo Island from and that's about it. It actually is a cute little city. The population is just over a million people (so quite a bit bigger than Darwin) but still feels pretty small. It also has some seriously improved shopping compared to Darwin. I have firmly established that my life in Darwin would improve exponentially if they would just build a David Jones there (that's a big department store....think an Australian Macy's).

This decorates one of the main intersections in downtown Adelaide. Not sure if a specific person is sitting on that horse but the plaque reads "In Memory of those who Fell".

The gates to Government House. A very pretty piece of land but really well hidden by all the trees and hedges.

One of the old buildings that I found in my wanderings. Not sure what it is but I feel it is part of the University.

When 1400 (2pm) arrived I made my way to Parliament House (I can hear your collective gasps of surprise) so I could take a look inside. Not a very big building and not a very big tour but I got to see a few things.

That's Parliament from across the street. Not much to it at all. The building was built in 2 parts in 1889 and 1932.

From the street you can't really see the dome but you sure can from the inside.

Looking at the very nice ceiling of the House of Assembly. This is in the west wing of the building that was built in 1889.

A broader look at the House of Assembly Chamber. Interesting to note that Southern Australia currently has it's first female speaker of the House, the Hon. Lynette Breuer.

The much newer Legislative Council. It was completed in 1939. Not nearly as fancy. I think they ran out of money.

Once the tour was over I checked out a few more places.

This is St. Peters Cathedral, one of Adelaide's biggest sights....or at least a place they ell everyone to check out.

I then made my way to the Art Gallery of Southern Australia. Free to enter (but no pictures allowed). I highly recommend it to anyone who visits the city. Won't take you very long to get through it but certainly worth a look.

And well that was my first day in Adelaide. Yes, I mostly napped but it was a long bus ride from Melbourne. The next day I would head out to Kangaroo Island.
