I Placed my First Bet on a Horse Race Ever........

......And I lost. But it sure did make it exciting.

Saturday afternoon (after Scott got off work) we gathered with a few friends and made our way down to the ARSS Club in Adelaide River. It was Adelaide River Cup Day, which is a big horse race in the area. What normally happens is people get there nice and early, start drinking, get really drunk, dance to some totally mediocre cover bands and then camp out in the area for the night. Oh and in between all that we watch a couple horse races and maybe place a few bets. We couldn't get out there too early but we did make it in time for the final race......the big race.

The parking lot.....a pretty good indication of how people inside were feeling.

Debi looking all race like. People do get dressed up for the event however they normally wear flip flops. Wearing flip flops doesn't mean that people will be able to walk later however......or string together coherent sentences.

That's the Winner's Circle. The guy in the green shirt is the jockey (as if he couldn't be....everything about him screams jockey) along with the owners. It turns out that some guys we know from lawn bowls are friends with the owner. Had we known that before we might have bet on a different horse. I can say without hesitation that I have never placed a bet on a horse race before today (not sure I've ever actually placed a bet on anything) but when in Rome..... Debi got a tip (apparently) from someone she knew so we placed a few dollars on that horse. He started out really strong but he really faded on the back stretch. Don't worry I didn't bet much money so I didn't lose much money.

Scott went pure class with a nice pair of dress pants and a hat combined with a blue wife beater. He fit in very well.

We all kind of underestimated how cold it was going to get that night so thank goodness Debi carries a blanket. Here is the group sharing the warmth. Starting on the left in the orange hat is Stef, and then someone (I have no idea who) and then Benny and then Jono and then Tommy, and then Adrian (hidden by Debi) and then Debi and Scott.

So the rest of the night went like this, we danced (yes the band was mediocre but what else was there to do), we had some drinks (actually a total requirement or they kick you out I think), we avoided the fights on the dancefloor (well kind of.....there were some really grumpy people out there......we were just there to have a good time), I had a snack and then eventually I went to bed. I woke up very cold.......seriously what was I thinking when I only brought one blanket? (Debi was also cold but at least she had Scott to snuggle up to). From what I understand Adrian had it right because someone lit his couch on fire so was warm all night long (he didn't realize that until he woke up but minor detail).

All in all, a very fun and pretty typical Northern Territory Saturday night. Next race......Darwin Cup in August.
