So I am learning all kinds of things while I am down here in the DC area. I incorrectly told Debi the other day that it was interesting how Washington DC (District of Columbia) is a city but also its own state. I say incorrectly because of course DC is not a state, just a piece of land (a district if you will) that hosts the federal government (someone famous decided many, many years ago that the federal government needed its own space so DC was born). DC has no representation in the House of Representatives which means that there is no one in the house voting on the behalf of the residents of DC. They are however taxed by the federal government the same as everyone else. This perfectly explains their license plate slogan “Taxation without Representation”. A bill was put forward a little while go that would have given DC residents this representation; however it was vetoed by George W. (or so I am told, maybe it was someone else but it does seem like something he would do).
