On loan from the Museum of American History

January 31, 2008

The National Museum of American History is currently closed for renovations (set to reopen probably this summer) but in the meantime, the Smithsonian has loaned a few items to other Museums so people can see some of their favourite items. I was very excited to see the Hope Diamond…only to learn that it is in fact on display at the National Museum of Natural History so I will have to wait until I head there to see it. However there were a few other things on display at the Air and Space Museum that I got to see including Kermit the Frog, R2-D2 and 3-CPO from Return of the Jedi, Mr. Roger’s red sweater and one of George Washington's original suits (I am told the only one that is still intact).

Here are a few others that I really enjoyed seeing.

These are the actual Ruby Slippers that Judy Garland wore during the filming of the Wizard of Oz.

Anyone who is a fan of Seinfeld will remember this shirt.

Muhammed Ali wore these gloves while defending the second of his 3 heavy weight championships.

This is an actual section of the Greensboro lunch counter. On February 1, 1960 four African American students sat down at the “Whites only” lunch counter (in these 4 seats) in a Woolworth’s store and politely asked to be served. When their request was denied the students refused to leave which started a 6 month sit-in protest and boycott of the store. In July 1960, the Woolworth lunch counter was desegregated. The Greensboro sit-it led to many similar protests across the south.
