The Space in Air and Space

Janaury 31, 2008

Of course it is the Air and Space Museum so there has to be some mention of space as well. In fact the museum is almost cut in half (one side all the airplane stuff the other side all the space stuff). Of course it was just recently (August 2006) that the International Astronomical Union decided to reclassify what a planet was so our solar system lost a planet. (That of course being Pluto, which is now considered a dwarf planet. But don’t worry, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are all safe….for now). I am excited to head to the other Air and Space Museum though because they have a concorde and the space shuttle enterprise (and a whole lot of other things).

The big thing I learned was that there were in fact 6 moon landings. Apollos 11 through 17 (minus of course Apollo 13 who did not make it to the moon) all had successful moon landings. I guess I just never paid any attention before because I really thought there was only one. (See all the information I am gaining from my time at the museums).

The Space Race Gallery had many artifacts telling the story of the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. I took this picture from the bottom of the missile pit.

One of the many space suits on display. I think this one looked the least uncomfortable out of all of them.
