What?......It's Fleet Week?

New York, New York

No, you're right. That is the Empire State Building...it just looks a little small from down here.

So I normally have Fridays off but I did a little switch and took Wednesday off instead which worked out really well because it allowed me to wander the streets of New York with Steve and Heather for the day.

Heather and I hanging out on the Empire State Building observation deck.

Our first stop...the Empire State Building. Yes I know.....you have already seen me there.....but that was at night. This time we went up during the day. Of course it looked very different and I was actually able to see things like my apartment,

If you look closely between those two taller buildings, you can see my apartment.

and Yankee Stadium and Central Park and Times Square.

Ok, you really have to squint through the haze to see Yankee Stadium but you can very easily see Central Park.

It was nice. It was also while up the Empire State Building that I came to the realization that it is indeed Fleet Week 2009. For those of you who are not sure, Fleet Week occurs every year and involves the streets of NYC being over run by Sailors and Marines.....all forced to walk around in uniform. Oh, what a glorious week. I think it has been firmly established that I do enjoy a boy in uniform so I will be enjoying it. How someone didn't warn me before hand I will never know.

A couple of the ships as they paraded into the city (up the Hudson). This included 3 Canadian ships who are also here to take part in all the festivities.

Gotta love the NYPD. This is in Times Square if you are wondering.

Anyway, once we saw all we needed to see from the air, we headed back to the streets. We wandered through Times Square again

Steve and Heather wandering with the crowd.

and made a stop for lunch at Mickey Mantles Restaurant and bar. It was really, really good and of course the place is covered with sports memorabilia, some very old, but some also very new. And memorabilia from almost every sport.

That's Mickey just in case you weren't sure.

From there we decided to make our way through Central Park. I have never really walked through the park before but it was a beautiful day and it took us in the direction that we needed to head so why not. The park really is beautiful. You almost forget for a moment that you are still in New York City.

Hanging out in Central Park.

Of course the highlight of the day (for me anyways) was the trip out to the Bronx to fix my eyes on the New Yankee Stadium for the first time.

Of course we also had tickets to the game but for me really this game was just a warm up for the games I will be attending in July. We headed there well before the start of the game so that we could check the whole place out.

Steve checking out the Bronx.

Hanging out in Monument Park. They moved it over from the old stadium.

I can't lie......it is a beautiful park. The views are much better than in the old park.

Of course this is not where our seats were. I think we all know I like to sit closer than this.

The ball park looks very similar but it is a huge upgrade (for the increase in ticket prices it better be). Safe to say I really enjoyed the game.....so did Steve.......and even Heather.

The view from our seats. Pretty good. I will be sitting a few sections closer in July though.

Today was a very, very full day and I think the three of us did more walking than we ever thought we could in one day. I know Heather and Steve will have many more very full days while in the city. I unfortunately will only be able to take part in a few of those days (stupid work) but of course I don't actually have to leave the city once the week is over.

A final view of the stadium from the subway platform.
