Happy Birthday US Marine Corps

US Embassy, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Friday, November 22, 2013

When I was in Canada, as usual I did a little bit of shopping. One of the things on my list was to find a dress for this year's US Marine Corps Ball. Easily one of the hardest tickets of the year to get, I lucked out this year and got one (a friend has a contact on the inside at the US Embassy). I decided I would forgo the cocktail dress and get something long. I wasn't sure what I was looking for but one trip to BCBGmaxxazaria when shopping with Heather in Milton and I found it.

The Marines hold balls to celebrate their birthday pretty much everywhere in the world where Marines are posted. There is obviously a big community in Riyadh to celebrate with so it is a big party. The night begins as you enter with a Marine greeting all the women at the door with a rose and then us be pointed in the direction of the open bar. Before dinner is served there are a few Marine traditions to see, one of which includes cutting a giant cake with a sword, a piece of cake being presented to the oldest Marine present and then that Marine presenting a piece of cake to the youngest Marine present (there was about a 40 year age span between the 2 of them). And then we got to eat and drink and dance.....and those little Marines sure do like to dance.

A quick look at the front of the dress. So glad I went with a long dress. It was a little chilly that night.

The back. Just a little bit of a train but not long enough to have anyone step on in.

I decided to have my hair put up this time......so you could see the top of the back of the dress. I was really happy with it.

Got to wear my new Swarovski earrings again. They match everything.

Once again, no pictures from the event but it was a very fun evening. We all got to leave with a Marine Corps flask too.

Happy Birthday US Marine Corps.
